PSA: nicknames you use in your contacts are revealed to recipient

I’m learning this awfully late in life.

I thought everybody did the same thing: you get someone’s info & put a little one or two word description in the contact field to help you remember.

Got an email from a friend and I could see the emoji she uses next to my name in her address book.

This is normal on apple mail and gmail? I tested on an old yahoo account, it doesn’t send the recipient the name you give them.

Even just misspelling a name could be a mistake that costs you socially. Who would want this as a feature? How is this not a terrible idea?

This article from 2014 talks about an app that harvests names and how much of a privacy violation that is. Apparently this is normal now : /
